    The importance of Lifelong Learning

    What is the reason for the perpetual path to knowledge? What is the benefit? 

    What is Lifelong Learning? 

      In the modern ever-changing era with daily scientific developments being the norm in many fields such as technology, economics, and education, knowledge and the constant search for knowledge are a challenge, if not an obligation. The aforementioned belief, continuing education, has been said with a philosophical connotation as lifelong learning.    Lifelong learning is defined as an approach that focuses on the learning opportunities and processes of the individual, recognizing that these opportunities and processes are fueled by many social institutions, including not only formal education and training systems, but also family, business, and the media.    In short, the term “Lifelong Learning” refers to a person’s education as something that starts at birth and continues unabated throughout his or her life. Therefore, it is not limited, and could not be limited under any circumstances, to basic education and studies, but it extends to other areas and continues every day. Thus, education can be enriched by a variety of activities, as well as by human interaction, in many ways.    Continuing education, as a set of educational activities and practices, has evolved into the form it has today through popular demands and processes that, at least at the beginning, were not linked to the need of some researchers or academics for the theoretical interpretation of learning behaviors and learning processes in the adult population. 

    Lifelong Learning and Sustainability 

      Lifelong learning in the field of environment and all areas that manage or maintain it, continuing education and training are a priority. The biographical “path” of individuals has changed as, in the past, the largest percentage of individuals since completing their studies and starting their professional careers without further specialization. Especially in areas such as food production. In today’s post-industrial society, in the knowledge society, and in conjunction with the economic crisis, this “model” no longer applies.    In recent years, the challenges of climate change, the need for proper food management and distribution, adaptation to new technologies, and much more call, rather, require a person to upgrade their knowledge and skills in the profession he continues to practice.    The role of lifelong learning in a space such as sustainability includes all forms of learning activities throughout human life. These activities aim at acquiring or developing knowledge, skills, and abilities, which contribute to the formation of an integrated personality towards nature and how it is worth treating. Be aware of the benefits and difficulties required by the aforementioned transition. To enrich therefore the professional integration and development of the individual, the social and environmental cohesion, the development of the ability to produce work and active participation in the environment and in the social, economic, and cultural development. Lifelong learning includes formal education, non-formal education, and non-formal learning.    It is understood that the right education, the right constant search for knowledge, does not focus only on the acquisition of academic knowledge, but is something much deeper that aims at the cultivation of spirit and morality. In nurturing the individual to treat the environment as a living and unchanging part of his life that, with proper and sustainable cooperation can yield many socio-economic and cultural benefits. So, every human contact, conversation, and interaction, whether it is long or seconds long, can teach a person something new that can prove very important. This grows when done in a planned and systematic way.   

    The need for Mindset Change 

      In the conditions for participating in the philosophy of “lifelong learning”, a person is required to keep an open mind, respect different views, and be humble. The avant-garde has not always liked conventional methods nor is it trying to do so. The greatest ideas have always met the greatest resistance. Therefore, the person who aims to change his mind regarding the sustainable transition must pursue knowledge in every way and seize opportunities to apply this knowledge.    Nowadays, the internet is a great asset for deepening our knowledge, as it now has a wide range of information on many topics. Of course, it is important to always check the validity of the information, especially those that deal with issues such as the treatment and management of the environment. This need is accompanied by the need for systematic action by initiatives by companies involved in the production, management, and promotion of knowledge in this field of sustainable management. Lifelong learning requires not only the “student” but also the “teacher”. Therefore, an even greater challenge is that of finding the organism that will be the pillar, the beacon, that will show the cognitive path to the sustainable transition.    The last-mentioned challenge is worth analyzing and refining further in a future article as, together with the participation rate which is unfortunately called Covid-19, it is probably one of the biggest problems facing the transition to sustainability and sustainable management. This is briefly explained by the recognition that global and comprehensive knowledge is of course acquired through physical activities. Through the incarnation and application of those who are transferred from the “teacher” to the “student”. Sustainable transition is an interactive and lively theme in any company. Either it is active in the field of food production, or in its processing, or in the field of hospitality.    Nevertheless, the current difficult pandemic situation should not be an excuse for further delays in the necessary training for organizational transformation that is heard in the term “Sustainable Development”. Humanity must keep pace with its challenges and aim to solve them. Climate change, the food crisis, the threatened cultural heritage of small places can all be tackled. All they demand is, as mentioned above and will continue to be mentioned in the future, a change of mindset in the face of such problems.

    As for Team Sports, He is a leader, but also a “fighter”. From a young age, he felt he was a team player and Water Polo was his game. His biggest achievement is that he had the honor to participate with the Greek National Team for three years.
